I love musical theatre. More commonly known as "musicals," these stage performances comprised of song, dance, and dialogue are a significant part of my life. I wouldn't say watching musicals is a hobby since there are not many reoccurring musicals in Hawaii, but I do enjoy listening to the songs.

The songs in musicals articulate various emotions a person can express. The emotional content can range from melodies of love such as the pieces in Wicked and Rent, the humorous tone in the songs of Avenue Q and Spamalot, or the anger voiced in The Phantom Of the Opera and Les Miserables. That's one of the reasons I adore musicals; they are much more dramatic than your average television show, mainly because it is live theatre. For me, I'd much prefer viewing a musical than watch a movie or a television show.

I'm pretty sure most people have seen a musical, because Punahou has done various productions such as Mikado, Pippin, Godspell, and Les Miserables. When I watch a musical, it's delightful to immerse myself in the storyline and watch as the plot unfolds.

Muscials may not appeal to everybody however, some people may think it's pointless, and some may find it an amazing spectacle. But I'm pretty sure that there is a musical out there that can relate to everyone in some way. And even though you think you haven't seen musical theatre, some of your favorite tv shows have done musical episodes such as Family Guy or South Park. And if you just haven't seen one, just try to take the time to find and then listen to the songs because in the end, it's all about the music. The songs from a musical can make any awful experience for me manageable. And at the end of a taxing day at school, or an agonizing night of homework, it's nice to know a song can turn my mood around.

I think that its really neat that you like musicals. I recently went to a musical/play in Las Vegas called Mama Mia. It was really good and I ususally don't enjoy musicals but i loved this one. If you have a chance to see it you should because it was great.

Commonplace Book Interview

Q: How much time do you spend on your commonplace book?

A: Unfortunately, not that much. I sometimes find it difficult because high school life is so hectic with the three hours of homework and studying for tests I have to do every night. But my future goal is to write in my commonplace book every day, half a page minimum, and if I like what I’m writing, I will expand it.

Q: What were your essential questions?

A: How does one deal with losing a loved one? What am I going to be when I grow up?
What is the effect of music on our lives?

Q: What was your favorite entry?

A: My favorite entry is probably the entry about “Scrubs,” a favorite television show of mine, and how they did a musical episode . It was interesting to write about and it releated to all three of my essential questions. The way they sang songs was a very nice treat from their normal episodes. It related to my other essential questions because it taught lessons about death and it gave me a good idea of what being a doctor is all about.

Q: How do you choose the topics you write in your commonplace book?

A: I usually relate my topics to my present day life. I want them to relate to my essential questions, but if they don’t, it’s fine.

Q: How is your writing style in your commonplace book?

A: It’s like writing in a journal for me. I don’t write much poems, don’t put many pictures, or make it coloful in design. I write my normal writing- I kind of write what I talk like in my commonplace book.

Q: How do you feel about the commonplace book?

A: I feel glad that I have some sort of a journal/ diary to write in, but that’s how I percieve a commonplace book to be. Some others may not think that. But I feel it’s good to right your feelings down on paper, you need to get them out. But if I wanted to be honest to myself, I sometimes feel indifferent towards writing in my commonplace book because some of the topics are difficult to write about, but as I said before, it will be one of my goals to write more in it.
